Old Chinese Temple of Johor Bahru
The first project of this semester is an individual on-site exercise in which we have to observe the physical and the immediate context of the site and then document it in the form of a sketch journal. Some of the aspects that may be included are architectural features, architectural elements, physical context as well as cultural aspects as long as the sketches comprise the Genius Loci, cultural attributes and technical or construction details.
The Old Chinese Temple of Johor Bahru is one of the oldest temples that stand on the site. The temple is perceived as the symbol of unity as a result of being a religious place to worship for five different Chinese Clans, which are "Teochew", "Hakka", "Cantonese", "Hokkien" and "Hainan". Still in the topic of unity, the surroundings of the temple also characterized a sense of unity where it can be seen the people there are more diverse. This could be one point of the Genius Loci of the site. The site is also imbued with many cultural aspects such as an annual ceremony done by the community called the "Chingay Ritual" and many more.
