The first project of semester three required us to design two contrasting monuments that represent the Old Malaysia and New Malaysia. The designs should emphasize the narrative that we want to create. In order to do that, we were to analyze two selected architectural precedents. The precedent studies are done for the purpose of teaching us to identify spatial poetics and spatial typologies as well as to implement it in our design.
From the design strategies that we learnt, we designed a concentric monument that captures the essence of Old Malaysia and a linear monument for New Malaysia. Lavyrinthos tells about how the Old Malaysia is like trapped in a maze, reaching for goals that we thought were shown by the government but in truth were never there. While Odyssey tells about the journey of the New Malaysia that took a leap of faith, bravely moving forward and took on the challenge to reach the New Malaysia that they wanted.
From this project, we learned about spatial poetics and how to tell the story through our design. We also learn about how to conduct an analysis and produce a precedent study.
